Before undergoing a Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test, clients should adhere to specific guidelines to ensure accurate results. Here are the key recommendations:

1. Fasting: Avoid eating or drinking anything (except water) for 5 hours before the test. Typically, an overnight fast is preferred.

2. Avoid Exercise: No strenuous physical activity for at least 12-24 hours prior, as exercise can temporarily increase metabolic rate.

3. Limit Caffeine and Stimulants: Do not consume caffeine or other stimulants (such as nicotine) for 4-6 hours before the test, as these can elevate heart rate and metabolic activity.

4. No Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours before the test, as it can impact metabolism.

5. Hydration: Drink plenty of water, but avoid excessive consumption right before the test to avoid skewing results.

6. Rest Before the Test: Ensure a calm, rested state by avoiding stress or activities that might elevate heart rate. Clients should rest for 15-30 minutes before the test.

7. Medication: Inform the testing technician of any medications, as certain drugs can affect metabolic rate. It may be recommended to avoid non-essential medications, but this should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Following these guidelines ensures the resting metabolic rate test is as accurate as possible by minimising external influences on metabolism.
