Feeling the Heat? How Warmer Weather Can Affect Your Recovery
As the temperatures climb and we make the most of those long, bright evenings, most of us welcome the summer sunshine. But if you're currently working through an injury, managing a niggle, or simply trying to stay active and mobile, the heat can have a bigger impact on your body than you might expect.
Here at Proformance Clinics, we see a noticeable shift in the kinds of aches, strains and flare-ups that come through the door once the warmer months arrive. So here's a little insight into why that happens, and a few simple things you can do to keep your recovery on track.
Heat, hydration and your muscles
When you're warm, you sweat more, and even mild dehydration can affect how well your muscles work. Well-hydrated muscle tissue is more supple, contracts more efficiently and is generally more resilient. When you're running low on fluid and electrolytes, you may find you're more prone to cramping, muscle fatigue and that heavy-legged feeling, none of which are ideal when your body is trying to repair itself.
Keeping a water bottle close by and topping up steadily through the day (rather than in big gulps when you suddenly notice you're thirsty) makes a real difference.
Sleep matters more than you think
Recovery doesn't just happen in the gym or the treatment room, it happens overnight. A great deal of tissue repair takes place while you sleep, and warm, stuffy nights can make good quality rest genuinely hard to come by. If you've noticed old injuries feeling a little grumpier lately, disrupted sleep may be quietly playing a part.
Warmer weather, busier bodies
Summer tends to bring a surge in activity. Longer bike rides, weekends in the garden, spontaneous games in the park, that half-marathon you signed up for in a moment of optimism. All wonderful things, but sudden jumps in how much you're doing are one of the most common triggers for strains and overuse injuries.
The body loves activity; what it doesn't always love is a rapid change in load. Building up gradually, and listening to any early warning signs, goes a long way towards keeping you moving all season.
Swelling and sensitive joints
For some people, particularly those managing joint issues or an acute injury, warmer weather can make swelling feel a little more pronounced. Knowing when to reach for heat and when cooling and elevation are more helpful can be genuinely confusing, and getting it wrong can slow things down.
A few simple summer recovery tips
Sip water consistently throughout the day, especially around exercise
Build activity up gradually rather than in sudden leaps
Prioritise good, cool, restful sleep where you can
Don't ignore the early niggles; they're usually easier to settle sooner rather than later
If something isn't quite right, we're here to help
Most summer aches settle with a little care and common sense. But if you've got a niggle that isn't shifting, an injury you're not sure how to manage, or you simply want to stay ahead of a problem so it doesn't interrupt your summer, we'd be very happy to take a look.
There's no pressure at all, but if anything's been bothering you, you're always welcome to book in with the team at Proformance Clinics. Sometimes a short conversation and a clear plan is all it takes to get you comfortably back to doing the things you enjoy.
Wishing you a healthy, active summer.
